Single Track Escape 2011

It's taken too long for me to get these photos up of this years race.  Thanks to all of you who came out to help set up, organize and volunteer day of the event.  I made the trophys again this year a big Thanks to Sunburst Granites of St. Cloud who continue to wonder what I am doing with chunks of granite for awards at a bike race!?...Dave is a good guy and is willing to support our granite needs.
Gianna was a big help as well as her dad!  Thanks!!
Set up went super fast this year.  We had a lot to do since the large mower broke down and we had to haul all of the smaller mowers out to groom the big field for the race start but everyone stepped up and helped out.  Having so many volunteers really made it a breeze compared to the first few years a few were out in the rain and bad conditions until the sun went down.
Pat helped with the safety cones as well as mowing the tall grass.  Thanks Pat!!
Raking and mowing the starting chute.
The lap area all set up.  Joe and his son inspecting.
Race day!!  Jack geared up to battle in his MMCC Jr. Cycling Club Jersey.
Sawyer and Josie Amo had great races on their home course!
Kids comp about to start with Mr. Anderson Mc'ing!
Sarah Stone with Elias and Me with Aunders!  Future MMCC Jr. Cyclists!
Local racer Lance Buening ripping it up.  He had a stellar race and finished in 3rd place in the Elite race.  Great racing Lance!
Kate, Jen, Jenna and Avery enjoying the nice afternoon.
And a HUGE THANKS to Revolution Cycle and Ski.  They gather tons of schwag each year to hand out for prizes and even donated this Cannondale Moutainbike for our annual raffle.  All the money made from the raffle, food and the race will go towards repairing equipment and gas for maintaining the mtb.  and ski trails.  Thanks to Revolution for sponsoring the race and our other local sponsors that sponsor various events for the club and help out at trail work.

Saving Detroit Mountain

I just got an email from the President of a group trying to reopen Detroit Mountain ski area in Detroit Lakes.  Jeff asked for me to pass this along:

We hope to re-open the ski area and we also hope to develop extensive mountain bike trails for summer use.
We are hosting a ski movie from Matchstick productions called "Attack of La Nina" as a fund raiser.  The movie will be shown at the Fargo Theater Sunday, November 20th.  Tickets are $15.  Doors open at 6pm with DJ, door prizes, and other cool giveaways.  If you have any contacts in the St. Cloud area that would be interested in supporting our efforts please continue to forward this information.  Please contact me if you are interested in helping promote this event or getting involved with our efforts.  I have included links to the Detroit Mountain web site and facebook page as well as to the movie link on the Fargo Theater website.

Thanks again!

Single Track Escape

The day is near, the trail is in the best shape it's been all year.  Yesterday Gerry Taylor; super volunteer blew out all the trail and he didn't leave an acorn or a twig within 10 feet of the trail, he also fixed up the broken bridge pieces. Bring a hammer and a rake if you have them.
This years commemorative hat for $20.00!  Buy one and you will be entered in the raffle to win ton's of schwag donated by Revolution Cycle and Ski and the Cannondale RZ 120-3! All proceeds go back to our trails!  See you out there!

Celebration of Life for Jim White and Memorial Bike Ride

Jim White was a founding member of the Mid MN Cycling Club, a long time cyclist Jim loved the local mountain bike trails and was found at pretty much every trail work night.  He also reported on trail conditions especially if there was a tree down.  Come and Celebrate Jim's Life with cyclists, Nordic Skiers and his friends and family Friday night and join the Memorial Bike Ride on Sunday.
Jim's Celebration of Life Memorial Party is set for this Friday July 22nd at 6pm at the Regency (912 Regency Plaza, St. Cloud, MN.-Former MiFamiglia and across from Paramount Theatre on St. Germaine Street) Downtown St. Cloud.  I know many of us are planning to ride there in honor of his love of the "pub rides" and place some bikes out front...

Also;

There will be a memorial road ride to celebrate the life of James (Crash) White, set for this Sunday, July 24th. The ride will begin at 9am leaving from his house at 610 6th Ave S St. Cloud, MN. A short and long route are planned, with all abilities welcome.

Meet another MMCC Jr. Rider

MMCC Jr Cycling Team Rider: Gianna Pitt, 4 years old.  Just finished her training ride on the bike course for Granite Kid Tri.  Tomorrow we work on swimming.
Good Luck Gianna!!

Please wait! We received several inches of rain...

Yes!!!!  The sun is out and maybe summer is here?  Finally!  If you head out on your mtb thinking you wish to ride the trails please just wait at least till later today so they have a chance to dry out some more.  I have not been out to the N. Loop but I am sure it will need 3-4 days of sunshine and wind to dry up the low lying areas, if not more.  The Plum Creek trail system drains faster but again with a wet spring there are some wet spots so just use some common sense.  Walk around or just stay out of the wet areas.

Thank you, MMCC Trail Crew

North Loop

A HUGE thanks goes out to the crew of 9 who cleaned up the fallen trees and the tall grass at the North Loop last Thursday.  Unfortunately the trails are pretty wet from all the rain so please let them dry out a little before you head out and enjoy them.  Rumor has it that the trail bits that were open earlier this year are good but the lower lying areas are mushy.  Use your brain.

A mowing date is in the works for Plum Creek/Riverbluffs single track, so stay tuned.

Most of N. Loop Now Open!!

Dear Fellow Cyclists,

Most of the North Loop was opened today!  With the wind and the warm temps the last couple of days things have dried out substantially allowing for more trail to be opened.  Please note that there are some spongy spots so make sure you go through them instead of around them furthering the width of the trail.  There are a couple of downed trees that you might have to walk around in the interim while we get a trail work night set up.

A big THANKS goes out to all the volunteers who came out to help with the mowing, clipping and Bridge placing at the Plum Creek/Riverbluffs trail.  This trail is in good shape for a couple of weeks.  Again a few wet spots, ride through them.  Don't widen the trail by going around them.

If you have not filled out your 2011 membership form do so and get into Revolution Cycle and Ski or Fitzharris Bike and Sport with your money and to pick up your one of a kind coffee mug, we just spent $200.00 on mower repair and gas for mowing and whipping and every ones help is needed.  We are really trying to push this year if you ride the trail that you become a member because we spend a lot of time and money on keeping them in shape.

Dan mowing through the thick grass that some of the trail at the Plum Creek/Riverbluffs Trail runs along.
Anderson and Dan taking a well deserved break w/ the temps in the upper 90's and the humidity very high.
Sheila, Sawyer and Josie clipped the overhanging branches.
Doom, Anderson and Dan hauled our neighbors old dock out to the wet pit out on the trail.  They also took care of some downed trees.

Thanks again to Sam Eggers, Josh Nelson, Bryon, Sheila, Sawyer and Josie Amo, Doom, Anderson and Dan for your help last night in such tough conditions.

  • Membership Drive: still going strong.  We still have some coffee cups so get into Fitzharris Ski and Sport or Revolution Cycle and Ski and pick up your limited offer MMCC coffee mug.  We have a few more coming in June.
  • Trail Work Plum Creek Monday Night 5:30pm June 6th.  Please wear pants and bring work gloves.  We have a lot of mowing and trimming to do.  Please meet at the white gate off of 33rd Ave.  The N. Loop will be planned soon, but much of this trail is still very wet.
  • Win a Yakima RocketBox ski carrier:! Thats right, this year thanks to Jim White's donation of a used RocketBox to the club all volunteers will get an entry at each trail work they complete.  At the end of the season one lucky volunteer will get a Rocket Box!  The more times you come to trailwork the better your chances of winning.  Estimated value is about $250!

MMCC Cup Sneak Peak and Bike Clinics

JD pulled a mug from the kiln this a.m. and is offering up a sneak peak at one of the designs! Pretty sweet!  I should have them in hand by Thursday night and the distribution plan will be unveiled soon.
Also it's been brought to my attention that there is a bicycle safety class being offered in St. Cloud by the APO (Area Planning Organization) this is a great course (traffic skills 101) and is the prereq for the League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification as per bicycle alliance of MN. Here's a page telling about TS101.

2011 MMCC Trail Supporters will get...

Just got these pictures from JD Jorgenson, a local potter from St. Joseph.  He's making up the coffee mugs for this 2011 MMCC Trail Supporter/Membership Drive coming up.  Looking pretty awesome!
Yet to be stamped.

I'll get a link to the 2011 membership form up soon.  I have a feeling these mugs will go fast!  Faster than you can ride a lap of the North Loop!

Trail Update

TRAIL UPDATE:

River Bluffs - Single track is all open and generally in good shape.  A few small wet areas exist.  Ride through these areas not around them.  Conditions are 99% good.

North Loop - The majority of the system is very wet.  A portion of the trail is open.  Many sections however are closed off.  Please abide by all closures and detours and do not go around the tape or rope.  Further if you see rope or tape dangling from wind or other events please re-tie it.  When that section opens we will remove all of the tape.  Please also report any issues with down tape via email reply.  As a season reminder NO CYCLING ON THE SKI TRAIL AT ANY TIME.  We hope to open sections periodically as conditions allow and assess this routinely.  People not abiding by closures will delay opening since it stays wet longer.

Thanks,

MMCC

Mud, Pottery and Coffee

The North Loop still has some wet spots so stick to the trails that have been opened, someone has left some good ruts on Jail Break (officially closed section).  With more rain on the way, make sure you wait a good amount of time for the trails to dry out nicely before venturing off road in the next few days.

The Annual club meeting and membership drive is taking shape and it looks like a Mid May date will be set soon.  We are having a local potter make coffee cups this year so I have to coordinate with him, sounds like the cups are going to be pulled from the kiln on the 18th of May so more to come on that.  Hopefully we can get some photo's from him of the production of the cups.  He's designing a cool MMCC logo too so it'll be a great year to be a MMCC Trail Supporter!  Same price as always $20.00 per person (1 cup), $40.00 for the family (2 cups)!

The MMCC Jr. Cycling Scholarship award winners should also consider making an appearance at this meeting because I will have their 2011 Racing jersey's and It will be good to introduce you to the club.

If your looking for more way's to support your local trails the club sells coffee at Fitzharris Bike and Sport and Revolution Cycle and Ski, $10.00 get's you an amazing lb of Fair Trade Organic beans by local roaster Muggsy.  Approximately $3.00 goes to the trails with each lb sold.

North Loop Trail Conditions Report

ATTENTION CYCLISTS! NORTH LOOP TRAIL CONDITION REPORT

We walked the beginning part of the North Loop trail system this evening.  Much of the beginning part of the trail has dried out nicely and is ride-able so we can now allow cycling on this section.  Once to "Slippery When Wet" it get's very wet and there is a lot of standing water, we've closed this section off, so please take the cut off option.  The ".03 Mile Trail" is also closed due to standing water and wet conditions. "Twisted Sister " is CLOSED too.

PLEASE ABIDE BY THESE CLOSURES AND ONLY RIDE ON THE FIRST OPEN PORTION OF THE TRAIL! The season is long and there is plenty of time to hit the other sections of the North Loop trail system.  If you see cyclists in areas they should not be in, show them the damage they are causing and push them into the mud. Winking smile

Thank You in advance and enjoy the single-track!

Happy Trails!
